Spacing and kerning a typeface is a demanding task: finding a balance between designed shapes, the letters, using the white space between them requires eye and concentration, experience and effort. It’s often a tedious and overwhelming job: it can sometimes take up to 60% of the font development time. Spacing and kerning may be a frustrating job because it’s evident there’s something repetitive in the process but it’s hard to deal with it. Time and energy remain committed resources when new designs are waiting and new projects have to be conceived.
iKern is the result of a research on autospacing and autokerning, or better computer aided type metrics generation, started in 2002. It can help produce highest quality spacing and kerning in short time. It’s also a service proposed as workflow optimization in typeface creation processes freeing resources for creativity.
